Lake County, Minnesota

Farm Programs & Local Resources

Last Updated: March 2026 | Always verify with your local USDA office. Report an error

Lake County stretches along Lake Superior's North Shore featuring rugged terrain, rocky cliffs, and the Superior National Forest. The landscape includes boreal forests, rocky outcrops, and numerous inland lakes with very limited agricultural potential due to poor soils and harsh climate.

Agriculture is extremely limited with most food production consisting of small gardens and hobby farms serving local needs. Some hay production and small livestock operations exist in protected valleys, but forestry and tourism dominate the local economy.
