Federal Programs in Nevada

Federal programs like EQIP, CSP, and FSA loans are available nationwide, but how they work in practice varies by state. Below is how the federal programs apply specifically in Nevada. For full details on any program, read the federal program guides.

EQIP in Nevada

Nevada is the driest state in the country and its agricultural operations are predominantly cattle ranching on vast rangeland , much of it intermingled with BLM public land grazing allotments. EQIP priorities focus on water and rangeland health.

Nevada EQIP Priorities:

  • Livestock water development (the defining constraint for NV ranching)
  • Grazing management and rangeland health
  • Sage-grouse habitat conservation (Nevada has one of the largest remaining populations)
  • Irrigation efficiency (limited irrigated acreage but critical where it exists)
  • Invasive species management (cheatgrass, pinyon-juniper encroachment)
  • Wildfire rehabilitation

Livestock-Specific Practices Commonly Funded:

  • Livestock water development (wells, springs, pipelines, tanks)
  • Cross-fencing for grazing management
  • Prescribed grazing systems
  • Brush management (pinyon-juniper removal)
  • Fence marking for sage-grouse
  • Heavy use area protection

EQIP in Nevada , What to Ask About: Nevada is one of the 11 western states covered by the Sage Grouse Initiative (SGI), which provides dedicated EQIP funding for sagebrush habitat conservation on private rangeland. Nevada is one of the bird's remaining strongholds, and SGI practices include prescribed grazing, conifer removal, and wet meadow restoration. For livestock operations, EQIP can also assist with livestock water development, fencing, and rangeland health practices. Ask your local NRCS office about SGI funding and other available initiatives.

CSP in Nevada

Nevada's few but large ranches with established grazing management are strong CSP candidates. Annual payments on large acreage add up even at modest per-acre rates.

FSA Programs in Nevada

Key FSA Programs:

  • Direct and Guaranteed Farm Ownership and Operating Loans
  • Microloans (up to $50,000)
  • LIP , livestock death from extreme weather
  • ELAP , drought-related grazing losses, water hauling
  • LFP , triggered by drought monitor conditions
  • ECP , wildfire damage to fences and infrastructure (critical in NV)

AMA: A Small EQIP-Like Program Worth Asking About in Nevada

Nevada is one of 16 states eligible for Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA), an NRCS program that runs alongside EQIP. It provides cost-share for water management, soil erosion control, and on-farm diversification — similar practices at similar rates, in a separate (smaller) funding pool. National AMA budget is around $15 million per year, modest compared to EQIP. If you’re considering EQIP in Nevada, ask your NRCS office whether AMA is a fit for your project.

Nevada Tax Provisions for Ag

  • No State Income Tax: Nevada has no personal or corporate income tax. All program payments and farm income are free of state income tax.
  • Agricultural Land Tax: Agricultural land is assessed at agricultural use value rather than market value. Given Nevada's rapidly growing areas (Las Vegas, Reno), this protection is increasingly valuable.
  • Sales Tax Exemptions: Farm machinery, equipment, and agricultural inputs are generally exempt from Nevada sales tax when used in agricultural production.

RCPP in Nevada

The Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) funds conservation projects through partnerships between NRCS and local organizations. RCPP projects vary by state and year — check with your local NRCS office or visit the RCPP page for current projects in your area.

ACEP in Nevada

The Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP) helps landowners protect farmland and wetlands through conservation easements. Two components: Agricultural Land Easements (ALE) protect working farmland, and Wetland Reserve Easements (WRE) restore and protect wetlands. Contact your local NRCS office for current enrollment.
