Located in the southeastern Adirondack Mountains, this county features mountainous terrain with numerous lakes including the southern portion of Lake George. Elevations range from 300 feet along Lake Champlain valley to over 3,000 feet in the mountain areas, with limited flat agricultural land.

Agriculture is limited by terrain and climate, consisting mainly of small dairy operations and beef cattle grazing on hillside pastures and mountain meadows. Hay production serves local livestock operations, while some farms have diversified into maple syrup production and agritourism.
