Located in the northern Sacramento Valley, characterized by flat, fertile alluvial plains formed by the Sacramento and Feather Rivers. The Sutter Buttes, known as the world's smallest mountain range, rise dramatically from the valley floor in the center of the county.

Intensive agricultural production focuses on orchard crops and field crops across highly productive valley soils. Rice cultivation dominates much of the landscape, with sophisticated flood irrigation systems creating seasonal wetlands that also support waterfowl habitat.
