America's northernmost borough encompasses the Arctic Ocean coastline, Brooks Range foothills, and vast tundra landscapes with continuous permafrost. The terrain includes the Prudhoe Bay oil fields, traditional Inupiat communities, and some of the most extreme Arctic conditions in North America.

Agriculture is virtually non-existent due to continuous permafrost, extreme Arctic conditions, and focus on oil industry and subsistence activities. Any food production is limited to small greenhouse operations and experimental growing projects designed to improve food security in the Arctic.

How to find your county's priorities:

  • Call your local NRCS office and ask: "What practices is the Local Working Group prioritizing this year?"
  • Ask which EQIP ranking pool your operation fits (there may be separate pools for livestock, cropland, forestry, etc.)
  • Check your state NRCS website for published ranking criteria
